FLYING HIGH

Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma was my host for a day on August 31st.  What I got was nothing short of the royal treatment with all the military bravado you would expect.  I got an up close look at Vance mission operations and the ride of my life.  I was treated to a six-G dose of reality in a T-38 Talon training jet.

This opportunity came to me after completing the shooting of "Rockets Red Glare" at Vandenberg AFB.  I had to wait to turn 18 before I could take the military up on their offer to give me an orientation flight.  Once that happened, Tom Giannazo, with military public relations got right on it for me.  He arranged for all of the approvals to begin and set me up at Vance.

My day at Vance started early with check in and flight preparations.  I had to pass the pre-flight physical, be issued my flight suit and safety equipment and be coached in the proper operation of the equipment.  Next, I was off to life support to be fitted for my helmet, G-suit and parachute.  This was the real deal.

After a "light" lunch I headed to my pre-flight briefing.  There I met Capt. "Wild Bill" Denham.  He explained to me what he had in mind for my flight, like all the loops and turns he would be doing while we were in the air and what I should expect.  It sounded like it was going to be a roller coaster ride without tracks.  At this point I was beginning to get a little nervous.

Once I climbed into the cockpit and was strapped in, I was handed by barf bags.  We began to taxi the runway to the point of takeoff.  As the canopy was lowered I thought..."This is it, here we go."  The jet went from the ground 0 to 30,000 feet in under a minute.  The loops, turns and maneuvers in the sky were amazing.  I'm proud to say I landed with all my "bags" intact, which is considered to be quite an accomplishment by even the most seasoned of pilots.  When I stepped out of the jet, I was like..."Where can I sign up...I think I'm going to have to join the Air Force."  But for now, I'll just stick to playing a fighter pilot in the movies.  I'm ready for Top Gun Two!

GOD BLESS AND KEEP OUR MILITARY MEN
